Finished
March 2, 2008
I handed in my PhD thesis on Friday morning with no problems and spent the rest of the day avoiding real work. Luckily my boss was very encouraging and said I should spend some serious time killing brain cells (which I didn’t really do).
Just after I handed in, I had a lovely coffee with Marion (GPCW) and Anna. Marion told me she thought a few times during the last year that I might give up my PhD quest. Luckily I never felt quite as bad about it as she apparently thought I did.
Kiwiman was lovely and gave me a set of sparkly earrings as a finishing-thesis gift. They’re beautiful. Yesterday we had an unrelated party for his workmates and I took the opportunity to celebrate a bit. I’m told that I’m expected to throw another celebratory party soon where my PhD buddies and work friends can mingle.
Today I returned to reality and spent the morning going through the feet-high stack of papers I printed during my PhD, recycling all but about 10 of them. I carried it a bit further and recycled most of my master’s degree coursework and lab notes as well. I’m never going to go back and read that stuff again. I amassed a large pile of stuff to scan to PDF in the high-speed photocopier at work – will work on that next week.
All this cleaning has made me quite tired, so I’ll work on my next short-term goal: doing absolutely nothing. I’ll excel at it, I’m sure.

Congratulations! I bet it feels so good to finally be done. What on earth are you going to do with ALL the free time you used to spend on the Monster?

Jennifer, I think Kim has the right idea – back to hobbies!! I was knitting a bit more just before I submitted, and have been reluctant to start any more big projects just yet. There’s a large cross-stitch piece I need to work on first.
I’ve been spending a lot of time at the gym, too – thanks, Jen, for the inspiration – and that’s going really well so far.
